Several years ago a friend of
mine brought me a tape recorded live in one of Russian jazz clubs. That
was Alex and Yuri. I traced them down asked them to do an album for me
and here it is. One of my favourite Russian Fusion tracks ever was
Dervish by Yuri Parfenov and his 70s band Boomerang (see compilation CS-05
Red Square Groove). I asked them to do a new version for me and was
very happy with outcome. Another fav of mine is Night Watch that is in
a similar mood that I call ‘Lonnie Liston Smith with a touch of East".
Title track is so funky that inspired us to do a couple of dance
remixes. Ganga, Zoroaster's Cube and Sphinx's Dream are under strong
Indian influence with an excellent Keshab Kanti Chowdhury on tabla. A
Hookah In The Evening, Elrisha and Minaret are deep extremely soulful
and spiritual jazz/ambient ballads. Oh, You my Field is a classic
fusion track with an accent on a strong rhythm and excellent two solos:
Yuri's on trumpet and Volkov on bass clarinet. This album is a
must for every Fusion lover. Future classic!

PETER
JOPPICH (Spinning Wheel Records)
Great to hear another
deep and
spiritual, and not a quick-shot-one-day-flyer record. My favourite are
"Night Watch" (which brings me a little on journey into the 80's), the
building "Dervish", and the flowing "Sphinx's Dream". They're diggin'
really deep here...
TOM
WIELAND (Les Gammas)
..brilliant jazz -fusion
LP,
indeed. It's amazing, how this sound continues in Russia...
WALDO
DEKEYSER (Plastiks magazine, Belgium)

DUSTY
GROOVE AMERICA
Funky
jazz from Russia -- featuring some great fusion numbers recorded by the
team of Alex Rostotsky and Yuri Parfenov, working here either together
or separately, in varying lineups that include trumpet, tenor,
keyboards, and reeds -- all grooving in a mode that recalls the glory
days of the European fusion scene of the mid 70s. Some tracks are
funky, others are more spacious -- but the whole set, although new, has
the spirit of the older Eastern European funky jazz classics that have
been issued so far by the Cosmic Sounds label.
