It was a winter 1983 when 5
exceptional musicians guttered
in Sarajevo on the eve of the Winter Olympic Games. The reason was
recording session that was a part of the Olympic Game's cultural
happenings. They recorded 13 tracks what was to long for one record so
it came out on two LPs under the titles "Blues In The Gutter" and "Snap
Shot". Both records came out on a local obscure label "Diskoton" and
they soon became very sought after by collectors all around the world.
On original masters I found that the working title was "5 Horns &
Rhythm" and I have noticed that Dusko still calls them like that. The
name came from the way the session was recorded. Dusko was playing and
overdubbing 4 trumpets plus Erich on trombone. This is the first
re-release of that material on a CD and the whole session is
featured on these 2 CDs.

A
2 CD set that combines material from 2 rare albums recorded by
trumpeter Dusko Goykovich -- orginally issued as Blues In The Gutter
and Snap Shot, and only briefly on a small Yugoslavian label! The
session was recorded in 1983 in Sarajevo as part of some sort of
trumped-up Olympic cultural event -- but the sound is very much in the
mode of Dusko's great 70s playing for MPS and other European labels.
The group's a quintet with American Alvin Queen on drums, which really
drives the whole session nicely -- and provides some excellent
slightly-funky backings that are similar to those that Alvin was laying
down on American sessions from the same time. Other players include
Erich Kleinschuster on trombone, Milos Krstic on piano, and Kreso
Rameta on bass -- but the strength of the Gojkovic/Queen alliance is
what really makes these sessions great. And don't be put off by the
obscure origin of the material -- because this is some of the best work
by Goykovich that you'll find on the market, period. The only thing
that seems to hold it back is a slightly rough recording quality with a
bit too much in the treble end, but the playing is more than enough to
keep things strong.
